According to Ridley Scott, the title of his upcoming sequel to 2012’s Prometheus has changed from Alien: Paradise Lost to Alien: Covenant. Scott also revealed that he plans to start shooting Alien: Covenant in February of next year.

The 77 year old visionary director was being interviewed last night at the AFI Films Festival (which you can listen to here) where discussed his legendary career at length. When talking about how he selects the films he makes, he said:

“I’ve got no plan. I go from pillar to post randomly. I have this childlike fascination and thrill of doing it.”

Talk then turned to his most recent movie, The Martian (which you can read my review for here), with Scott casually dropping a couple of new details about his next project.

He said: “I was going to be doing what will be called ‘Alien: Covenant,’ which starts shooting next February, and we were struggling then with the screenplay there and then there was a phone call, somebody saying, ‘Listen, we’ve got this thing which is completely written called ‘Martian,’ and I said, ‘Huh.’ And I sped read it in an hour and by mid-afternoon, I talked to Fox and said, ‘I need to talk to ‘Drew [Goddard]…’”

Scott’s direction of Goddard’s script led The Martian to box office success, with its current earnings standing at $464 million worldwide – making it the highest grossing film of his 38-year career. The Martian was also very well received by critics with the general consensus being that it was his best work in years.

Before the release of The Martian, many wondered if Scott was past his best as he delivered a string of films that weren’t terribly well received and I still maintain to this day that 2013’s The Counselor is one of the worst films I’ve ever seen. But this year the veteran director proved he still had his touch as The Martian reminded everybody what a fantastic filmmaker he is.

Thanks to Scott we’ve been able to enjoy classic films such as Alien, Blade Runner, Gladiator, Black Hawk Down and American Gangster – and hopefully his next film Alien: Paradise Lost , oops I mean Alien: Covenant, will be added to that list of iconic movies.

Alien: Covenant is set for a May 30 2017 release
